Re: Understanding the Dangers of YouTube: The Dark Side of Unlimited Content (Score: 1) | ![]() | This article mentions Cybersitter and NetNanny as two examples of home computer filtering packages. These are very useful and popular. However, I have found SafeEyes to be more effective and feature rich for the task. Beyond the basics of content and popup filtering, SafeEyes will keep a internet accessible record of usage, and most importantly, notify you via email or phone when violations are occurring. This gives us as parents tremendous opportunity to minister to our children when they are making dangerous choices. SafeEyes offers a 15-day trial if you are interested in checking it out. For your convenience here are some useful links: CyberSitter - http://www.cybersitter.com/ NetNanny - http://www.netnanny.com/ SafeEyes - http://www.safeeyes.com/ Filtering for Linux - http://software.newsforge.com/print.pl?sid=04/06/23/1521209 |
Re: Understanding the Dangers of YouTube: The Dark Side of Unlimited Content (Score: 1) | ![]() | Good and important post! Thanks! Concerning “Cybersitter” and "NetNanny" I would say that the best kind of web filter is training the children that there is stuff that is wrong to look at, and that they should avoid these sites. Having the computer in the living room, or family room, and orienting the display so that the parents can see it as the child is using it, is a much better filter than any software. This is because it allows the parent to council the child about the bad stuff. No software will stop the filth that is out there 100% of the time, since the filth peddlers spend a lot of resources to get around the safeguards. This approach also gets you out of the line of fire, since if you recommend a program and it fails, then you look bad. Good Luck! |

Most of them are harmless fun, or may even have good or impactful messages. But some of the content seen in YouTube is questionable, and we shouldn’t be oblivious to its dangerous side. |
