After surgery… radiation!
We have moved on to the next leg of this journey – Monica had her bilateral mastectomies on December 19 and started radiation on February 14, 2008. The toughest part of this segment will probably be the dailiness of it – Monica will need to go to a local Worcester hospital every weekday (unless it’s a holiday, such as Monday) for a 10-minute treatment. This will go on for 34 treatments, which brings us to early April. Other challenges will be possible side effects such as sore, red skin (like a bad sunburn) and/or increasing fatigue, more probable for Monica as she’s already tired from chemo and surgery. We value your prayers for her during this time – her daily appointment is for 2:15 Monday – Friday. She plans to work half days during radiation, which gives her daily time with her 2nd-grade students but also some space in her schedule.
If you would like to follow Monica through the rest of her cancer journey, you can read her journal entries at http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/moileigh -- and you can send her notes of encouragement in the guest book. One special help was a resource she found in a book: a woman who had gone through radiation noticed how forlorn and undignified people looked in the hospital johnnies as they sat in the waiting room. You know how those johnnies are often faded, torn and never fit; they always gap in awkward places and it seems you need three hands to keep them closed while you walk down the hall. This woman went on to design elegant hospital gowns with Velcro closings. We ordered a beautiful pink tunic with black trim just before radiation began and Monica had it for her second treatment. How special to feel covered and looking well going into treatment! If you know of someone who would appreciate knowing about these gowns, let me know and we’ll send you the website.
I’m writing this from a motel on Cape Cod (West Yarmouth) – Wayne and I were able to get away for the long weekend and use our Choice Privileges points for a getaway. We have been on leave of absence for almost 8 months – so far we haven’t had to scrounge dumpsters or live under a bridge. God has touched the hearts of many people who have responded to give us meals and gifts to get us through this time. He has been our strength throughout many difficult days. Thank you so much for your prayers and encouragement.
Please pray with us as we set a date to return to Ivory Coast. Since Monica should finish radiation in early April, we are looking at an early May departure date. May we have God’s wisdom to know the very best time to leave! God knows the plans He has for us and what He wants us to do in the next few months.
Resting in Him,
Wayne & Melody Nelson |
