Greetings from Ghana,
We trust that all of you had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We wanted to greet all of you on Christmas day but our phone and Internet service went out of service on December 23rd thru December 31st. We are now back up and running. Praise the Lord!
This week I have been in Bible school taking a Greek class. It has been a refresher class for me, but still I have learned a lot about the language. I'm sure I will be teaching it in the future.
We have a lot to bring you up to date on here in Ghana. The work here continues to be moving at a fast pace. I'm often overwhelmed at what God is doing here in Ghana. If you remember on Sunday, November 4th, I came down sick with what I thought was malaria. The next Sunday we had a baptism scheduled with 21 people to be baptized. We sent a vehicle out to Adutwie to bring our people from the village because ten people were going into the waters of baptism. I was saddened that I could not be there, but I was told it was wonderful day.
We have seen a continuous flow of visitors nearly every week. Many of them have accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and personal Savior and have continued to come to church.
The Children's Bible club has been a real encouragement to Dona and the others working with her. We have been averaging about 85 to 100 children every week in Adutwie. Many of them are really listening and growing in their knowledge of God's Word. The Bible club in Tuobodom has fallen in attendance lately because of school being out and harvest time. I believe we need to get some games to encourage the children. We have a need for more workers to make it all happen. Please pray with us for willing servants to help in this area.
We have had a big drop in attendance on the Sunday evening services. Much of the problem has been the electricity problem which is now corrected for a time. We have moved our Sunday evening service to 6pm to try to encourage more people to come, and since then, we have seen a renewed interest. We have also started an Evangelism Explosion series on Sunday nights to better equip our people in the area of evangelism. This will benefit our visitation program. We have seen an interest and are praying that this will strengthen our people in their walk with the Savior.
Pastor Thomas and his family are looking to relocate to Sunyani. His home church is now without a pastor. He has said "that he believes that God has called him to that church." Pray for them as they pray about this move.
We had one of our old church members Sack return to church after being gone for 1 1/2 years. It was a joy to see him back at church. We have gone to Sack at least a half a dozen occasions to encourage him to return. We will ask you to pray that the rest of his family will come to church also. Sack was a deeply committed member to the work, but some problems arose while we were in the States. He walked away from the church rather than solve the problems. I believe that we can get all the issues resolved and see him become very active again.
The Peterson family:
We are all doing well. Dr. Boateng has put me on a thyroid drug called "level-thyxoxine". The medication seems to be what I needed, because I'm not as tired and fatigued as I was. I have had no more spells since November, and my blood pressure has stabilized and my pulse has gone up. Praise the Lord! Dr. Boateng and I will be meeting on Monday of next week to discuss any further needs. I will be on the thyxoxine for at least another 30 days. He wants to run another blood test to see what the thyroid levels are doing. We had a MABMI Africa field conference at the coast for a week. It was a great time of being away from the work and relaxing at the beach. It was also a great time of spiritual challenge as we had Bible sessions every day. Rebecca is doing well. She has been enjoying Samantha Volante being back here in Ghana. So the two of them are usually with each other. Julia has just finished her first term in P1 (first grade). In September she started KG2, but the teachers felt that she should go to P1. She was given a test to see how she would do, and she passed the test and was moved to P1. I was figuring that she would be somewhere in the middle of the class when report cards came out. Praise the Lord she was 2nd in the class of 36 students. Julia is very bright, so pray as we try to give her a chance to excel in her education. More importantly, this November we had a camp week at the school, and Julia prayed to accept Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior. We are excited about this news, and pray that as she continues to learn about Jesus, she will grow strong in her faith. We went to the America Embassy to file paperwork for her immigration papers. They said that we still need a home study. We gave them the home study from Ghana but were told that we needed a home study from an approved agency in MA. Wow! How do we get that over here? It looks like we will have to get Julia a Ghana passport. Then when we come home in 2009, we can try to get a home study done. Please pray that we can get this resolved.
In His Service,
Jim, Dona, Rebecca, and Julia |
