Cell Phone (from US): 011-225-06-77-40-95 – we are 4 hours later than Massachusetts.

Finally – the first workbook is ready to print!

Saturday afternoon I finally proofed the last page of Workbook 11 (The Pastor and His Work). No, that’s not the workbook I was halfway through in July… During a mid-July meeting with Pastor Abdoulaye, the director of PEDEBE (the Bible education by extension program), he mentioned that a number of pastors were waiting to begin their third and final year of studies (there are five courses in each year). I decided to put Book 3 aside and prepare Book 11 so these pastors could begin their studies. While Wayne is printing Book 11, I’ll go back to Book 3. Please pray about Books 1 and 2 – Abdoulaye entered them on his computer which is no longer working. He needs to get them to me on CDs so I can prepare them for printing. When Books 1, 2 and 3 are printed, sutdents can start the first year of training. I’ll then probably do Book 12, then Book 4, keeping ahead of the classes. It’s not the order we had originally planned, but it should work!

I try to spend several hours each day typing in Cebaara. That is going well, but I find that the proofreaching is very important and time-consuming. Since I don’t know the language at all, I proof it by reading and matching each letter! But Pastor Abdoulaye thinks I probably proofread better than he would, as he would just see if the sentence made sense to him. As I work I keep in mind the pastors who are waiting for the books. Please pray for Wayne as he begins printing this workbook; I keep thinking of the Risograph as a rather new machine as I remember when the school bought it – but that was eleven years ago!

If you would like to be a part of this effort, we now have a special project (#910 CI/CDT BEE – manual production) to receive donations; 100% of the money given goes toward reprinting these workbooks. All gifts should be sent to WorldVenture, 1501 W. Mineral Ave., Littleton, CO 80120-5612.

A real delight each Sunday is the English club that meets after church. This was begun recently by several university students; one (Timothy) is the son of one of our early missionaries’ language helper. I’m amazed at the quality of the English that the university students are learning and we offered to do an English Bible study with them. When Timothy said that several friends were interested in the study, I envisioned a group of 4 or 5, but each Sunday we have 15-20 eager participants, in all stages of English proficiency. This gives us an opportunity to use our French as we make sure that the verses are read in both languages. It also makes me pay close attention in the French service as so often what I have planned for the class is in the message! One Sunday my lesson was “Christians walk with God” and the sermon was on… walking with God!

National elections have been scheduled for November 30 and at every prayer meeting there is a call to pray for peace for the country. Each month there are several days when something happens because the rebels haven’t been paid. Several times all the stores in town were closed to avoid looting (makes it hard to shop for food!) and two weeks ago the road into Bouaké from the north was blocked. Our co-workers came down in two different vehicles: one waited for several hours and got through, the other had a great deal of cash so went back north and tried again the next day. Can you imagine driving 2½ hours, getting within 15 minutes of your home and having to turn around and go back?

Now that we’re well into the PEDEBE project, we know what supplies we will need from the States. We’re praying that we can make a trip in the near future to bring back these items and other things that will make our time here easier. We’ve been going to church on our co-worker’s motorcycle as it’s much cheaper and also much more comfortable – the large wheels take the potholes much better than the truck. We were excited the other day when we saw helmets for sale in a store, but when we stopped to buy one, we found that they were “one size fits all” and they were all exrra large!

Making (slow but steady) progress! Wayne & Melody Nelson
