Greetings from Ghana!

October was a very interest month - from trouble in Tuobodom to seeing the Lord work in people lives. On October 7th, I had traveled to Accra to pickup Susan Oppenheimer who was returning from furlough. Pastor Samuel and I were eating supper when I received a phone call from Dona. She said that the main street of Tuobodom was lined with military and police officers standing only feet apart. She said that earlier in the afternoon the Techiman Chief was traveling to Tuobodom for the Tuobodom Chief’s Yam Festival. When he was almost in Tuobodom, there were gunshots heard, and five of his men were shot. One was in serious condition with a gunshot wound to the head. Praise the Lord, everyone is alive. Dona and the girls went to church for Bible club, but with shots still ringing in the distance and people running for their homes, a decision was made to cancel all church activities. Dona and the girls arrived home safely. However the increased military and police presence in Tuobodom is still being seen.

Then just one week ago armed robbers attacked a truck parked in the center of Tuobodom killing the mate and stealing cell-phones and money from the driver. This was a terrible tragedy which increased tension in the village. We hear that the increased military and police will be here until after the national election on December 7th. Please pray for Tuobodom and for the upcoming elections.

We held our Brong Ahafo pastors fellowship in Nkwabeng, a village between Nkronza and Techiman. After showing a film and preaching God’s Word, about 20 people received Christ as their personal Lord and Savior. We give God all the glory for this successful event.

Last week, I was involved in our annual Calvary Camp ministry at the Christian School in Krobo. Calvary Baptist International School has been split into two campus - Junior High School with about 80 students in Krobo and the Elementary School with over 400 in Techiman. We had great weather for the camp which we had prayed for and God answered our prayers. During the four day camp, fourteen young people came to know Jesus Christ as their personal Savior. Our Lord is wonderful! In December we will be having Calvary Camp for Elementary School children. Pray for us as it will be a busy week.

In Adutwie, there has been some growth in the church. We praise the Lord for this increase. The people here always ask excellent questions which allow us to ground them in the Word. The church is looking at the possibility of purchasing some land. Hopefully, we will look at a couple pieces of property this week. Pray with us that we will make the right choice of land. We will build a simple structure about 25’ x 50’. The Children’s Bible Club has been going on with the attendance over 100. These children are learning many of the Bible stories. When Dona reviews what she has taught them, many of them remember almost every detail. It is good to see that kind of thirst for God’s Word. Praise God.

In Tuobodom we are seeing visitors almost weekly. We are working at visiting them to try to encourage them to keep coming to church. We have also been working on putting a fence around the church property. We have a farmer that lets his cattle roam the property, and they have been making a mess of the church property. This fence has caused some problems though. There is a man that keeps pulling up the poles on the back edge of the property. We have gone to the Chief to ask for his help. He has assured us that he will summons all parties and he will warn them to stop.

We have a number of people who would like to learn English. We would love to have a class to teach them. But this will come later. Most of our people (85%), cannot read the English or the Twi language. Our people are learning, but it is not an easy process.

Our Faith Promise Missions Conference was held on October 12-19. We had four missionaries with us, two which we support and two missionaries from Togo. We had some good preaching, some fun with occasional three-way translation, and some good challenges for the people with regards to giving God’s way.

Children’s Bible is has been climbing in attendance week. This week there were 177 children. We want to praise the Lord for some more workers.

Our family is preparing to come home for furlough next April. Please pray for us as we plan to report to some churches that we were unable to meet on the last furlough and try to raise more support at new churches. We do have one problem - Julia’s Ghana passport has not come in yet. We are praying it comes quickly because getting an American Visa is difficult. Our American passports will expire in January, so we will be making a trip to the Embassy to renew them. We are hoping to get Julia’s visa then, so that she will be ready to travel in April.

We want to thank all of you for your financial and prayer support of our ministry here in Ghana. We appreciate your love and sacrifice during these difficult times. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

In His Service,
Jim, Dona, Rebecca, and Julia
