Greeting from Ghana;
A lot has happened in both America and Ghana. Each country has elected new Presidents and representatives for the people. Ghana’s new president is not the one that many here were hoping for. We thank God that the election process was peaceful. Pray for the new government. Just like the change of government in America, there is the blame game that is being played here. We have been praying about the economic situation in America with many businesses laying off workers. Our son Jonathan is waiting to see what the union will do with its contract with AT&T. It’s hard to believe that some unions are fighting for more money in a depressed economy.
It’s hard to believe that in 8 weeks, we will probably be home. I say probably because we still have some hurdles to jump over for Julia. We want to praise the Lord that her adoption is now “FINAL”. We have fulfilled the 2 year waiting period as of February 6th, and we were in court on February 9th to receive the final adoption papers. We are now focusing on one hurdle at a time with her Ghanaian passport being next. Today, we will be calling on her passport to see if it has been issued. When that is issued then we have to go to the American Embassy. We will need to get her an appointment for an American Visa. In the past getting this appointment was very easy - just go online, but now it is very difficult to get an appointment. Please pray for all this to happen in a timely manner.
We have just returned from our Mount Abarim African Conference. We had an awesome time with excellent preaching. All of the messages challenged each of us for the work God has called us to. We also did our planning for the 2009 year. We have set some aggressive goals for this next year. There is going to be a survey trip to Mali in a few short weeks. Pastor Steve will travel to Burkina Faso to meet with Pastor Keith Shumaker. Then they will travel to Mali to meet with Pastor Andre from Mali. They will have a pastors’ fellowship to meet the Baptist Pastors from Mali. In June, Pastor Miguel Triano and his family will be leaving for Cape Coast to start a ministry there. Cape Coast has one of Ghana’s largest universities.
Tuobodom:
We have been greatly encouraged by the spiritual growth of some of our members. It has been a delight to see them growing in their knowledge of God and learning to lean on God. Please continue to pray for the Tuobodom church. As we are leaving on furlough, one of the pastors from Techiman will be coming to help Pastor Ameyaw. Pastor Ameyaw lives in Tuobodom, he is very active in contacting the church members that have not come to church. He is my eyes and ears as to things that are going on in the village.
The ladies fellowship has been greatly used by God this last year to instruct our ladies. The group averaged 17-23 ladies every month. In the Children’s Bible Club, we have seen four of our members coming every week to help in this ministry. One of our Ladies (Sister Akose) has been learning herself from the Bible lessons. She is very eager to learn, but her problem is in reading the Twi and speaking English. If we could have someone come over to Ghana with an express interest in teaching English to our people, this could be a very useful tool for reach people for Christ. When the people would come for class, there could be an evangelistic emphasis. This method has been used in Burkina Faso by a missionary, and many are now in the church because of the class.
Adutwie:
The village has been a blessing to all who go and see it working for Christ. The children’s Bible Club has averaged all year at 100. We have seen many of the children being able to recall the Bible lesson that they have been taught. We have see even some of our adults going to learn more about God through the stories that are being taught.
We have spent most of our time this term in Tuobodom with the building program and getting the people interested in working in the different ministries of the church. We have successfully completed “phase 1” - the church building program. We have seen some of the people start working in different ministries (like translation, ushers, Children’s Bible Club and visitation team). We now are preparing to hand over the leadership of the church to a Ghanaian pastor. The Tuobodom church is now about 7 years old. Our plan is that when we return in the summer of 2010, that we will take a very reduced role in the Tuobodom church. We are planning in 2010 to pursue a radio ministry.
The Planned Radio ministry:
On February 24, 2009, we had a meeting with the newest radio station in Techiman. We talked with the owner of the station about some ideas for helping his radio station, as well as us using the radio station to begin our program.. This station currently has a listening base of 1.9 million people. I will bring more details in the very near future about our radio endeavors.
In His Service,
Jim, Dona, Rebecca, and Julia |
