And all God’s people said, “Wow!”

This phrase caught on with the students at International Christian Academy when taught by the visiting pastor conducting a Spiritual Emphasis Week years ago. Somehow it communicated a sense of wonder to us that was missing after years of saying, “Amen!” I found myself saying “Wow!” often on Saturday, Sept. 22.

On Thursday morning, Sept. 20, I got a call that my brother, 76, had died earlier that morning of recurring cancer. We left at 4:30 the next morning to drive out to the Chicago area, arriving about 11:00 p.m. CST. The next morning all of the family gathered at the funeral home for calling hours followed by a memorial service. My brother had accepted Christ as a child and spent his early years in the same church in which I grew up; I don’t think he ever went to church after he returned from his time in the Navy. However, he had a deep respect for what we did as missionaries and visited my mother every day she was in a nursing home (for six years). I’ve been praying that he would realize how much God had done for him over the years, especially after learning that his cancer had returned. And God was at work behind the scenes...

The current pastor of the neighborhood church my sister-in-law attends is a vibrant Christian who loves God and His Word. He visited her the night before my brother died and noticed that he was anxious although semi-conscious. He read Psalm 116 to both of them and assured my brother that God remembers the promises we made when we were young. Peace came over my brother and he died quietly the next morning. The service was full of Gospel music, this testimony, and the joy of Heaven. I sat there in wonder, saying over and over, “Wow! Who would have thought that my brother’s funeral would present the Gospel so clearly!” It reminded me once again that God does hear and answer prayer – and that He is always at work.

Monica was understandably upset that a relative died of cancer. She is currently having a problem with her breathing – on her third treatment, she suddenly turned bright red and couldn’t breathe. When the Taxol was stopped, she recovered. The rest of the treatment was given slowly, and she’s had two more weekly treatments since, but today she couldn’t read out loud to her students. Her steroid medication has been doubled, as well as more Benadryl, but her doctor has to decide whether or not to continue her on Taxol. Please pray for wisdom for the doctor and encouragement for Monica as she copes with development.

Last Tuesday, as I was doing my errands, our car stalled at a stop sign. It was one of those embarrassing times when I couldn’t get the car started and was in the middle of traffic. I was very thankful for my cell phone and AAA membership – I rode in the tow truck to our neighborhood mechanic’s shop where the car remains to this day. We have a broken timing belt and are probably facing quite a hefty bill. But I’m so thankful the car didn’t break down on our quick trip to Illinois or even locally when I was taking my mother-in-law shopping. God knows what He is doing and He has promised to provide for our needs. Thanks so much for your gifts and prayers – God is definitely at work!

Wow!
