When I'm just reading, I tend to read the New Living Translation because it get's me out of lesson-preparation-mode and makes me look at the text from a more devotional and personal perspective. However, when I'm studying, I tend to focus on the New King James Version, and compare it to the Geneva Bible, Young's Literal Translation, the Darby Bible, as well as the original language bibles. My goal in studying is to get past a particular translator's perspective and understand what the text itself is saying. Lastly, I'll go to notes and commentary to see if others have seen the passage the same way and/or if I've missed what others have seen. |

That is the one I bring to church, also. However, I also have the New Century Version with Max Lucado as the General Editor. The language is less formal, but what I really like is that Lucado provides "Life Lessons" in the margins. He refers to passages from the bible, writes an observation, applies it to life and provides other scriptures to explore. He also has additional "topics" inserted throughout the bible (e.g. fear, anger, grief, etc.) to read about. He provides a brief summary/discussion and gives the reader additional scripture to explore. Study questions are also provided. |
